Passive stretching is a form of static stretching in which an external force is exerted upon the limb leading to increased range of motion and flexibility. This is in contrast to active stretching. There are two forms of static stretching. One is called passive because it requires no effort on the part of the person performing the exercise. The other is called active as it does require individual effort. Stretching prior to exercise warms up the body making it less prone to accidents and injuries.
Stretching following exercises relieves muscle tightness, improves flexibility and cools down the body.
