4 Easy Ways To Cope With Anxiety

4 Ways To Cope With Anxiety

Anxiety manifests itself in different ways. For some people, it manifests as a nauseous feeling, stomach pains, and sweating, while for others it manifests as hyperventilating and a racing heart. Sometimes anxiety doesn’t manifest itself physically at all.

Everyone experiences anxiety differently. Experiencing and living with anxiety can be scary and uncomfortable, but thankfully there are some tips and tricks that you can do in your everyday life to help you cope with your anxiety.

Count Backward From 100 in Intervals of 4

When you are experiencing anxiety, it is often helpful to redirect the mind so that it is not focused on the thing that is triggering the anxiety. Counting backward from 100 in intervals of 4 is a great way to do this. If you make a mistake with an interval, start back at 100 until you make it down to 0 or until you feel calm again.

Deep Breathing

Breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth several times is a great way to force your body to breathe properly. Ensuring that your body is getting enough oxygen and encouraging blood flow through this proper breathing technique will trigger your brain into relaxing. If breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth is not sufficient, try “square breathing”: breathing in through your nose for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds, breathing out through your mouth for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds, and repeating until calm.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a long-term method of coping with anxiety. It is meant to induce relaxation in people both physically and mentally. Like deep breathing, it promotes blood flow and focuses on a physical sensation that is relaxing.

If you struggle with any kind of anxiety, counseling services may seem very intimidating. However, many people who struggle with anxiety have found great success in speaking to a counselor. Unloading your anxiety, understanding it, and learning the best ways to redirect your thoughts down positive avenues is another great long-term method of dealing with anxiety.
